The Orbitor Public Gateway
Orbitor is a new IPFS public gateway by ChainSafe, offering region-aware, low-latency access to decentralized content across South America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. Built for resilience, scale, and openness.
We’re excited to share that ChainSafe is rolling out Orbitor, a new gateway for IPFS Mainnet, the IPFS public network.
Gateways play a key role in making IPFS accessible. They translate HTTP requests to IPFS, fetch content from the IPFS public network, and return that content back via HTTP. This allows anyone access to the decentralized public IPFS network directly through a standard web browser, with no separate install required.
ChainSafe Infrastructure
Through our continued work in open decentralized infrastructure, such as building and maintaining client implementations including Forest (Filecoin), Lodestar (Ethereum), and Gossamer (Polkadot) while also operating production-grade Filecoin bootstrap nodes, Ethereum validators, and infrastructure spanning multiple decentralized networks, we’ve seen firsthand how geographic diversity significantly enhances both performance and resilience in public systems.
We’re excited to support the IPFS network in its goal of accessible, decentralized content distribution by operating a new IPFS public gateway designed to deliver region-aware, low-latency access to IPFS.
The Orbitor Gateway
Orbitor will operate across three regional endpoints: South America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.
These endpoints are backed by highly available IPFS nodes and monitored for reliability, speed, and abuse protection. This approach reduces latency by serving content closer to users and increases robustness against regional network disruptions or DDoS events.
Regional endpoints:
- Global 🌎: https://ipfs.orbitor.dev
- LATAM: https://latam.orbitor.dev
- EU: https://eu.orbitor.dev
- APAC: https://apac.orbitor.dev
With fully integrated monitoring, scheduled GC-aware caching on upstream Kubo nodes, and abuse mitigation coordination with trusted ecosystem partners, the gateway is built to be a reliable and transparent participant in the broader IPFS network.
If we want IPFS to be accessible to everyday users, gateways can’t be bottlenecks. They need to be open on-ramps built for scale, resilience, and public good.

Gateways as a Transition Tool
While gateways serve as an important bridge today, they're designed as a transition tool. IPFS is actively investing in browser-native approaches that eliminate the need for gateways or additional installs. With the recent launch of Helia's service worker support, developers can now bundle IPFS directly into web applications, enabling peer-to-peer content access from any standard browser.
In the coming year, ChainSafe will be collaborating with the IPFS Foundation and community to determine the future role of gateways as these browser-native approaches mature.
